About our centre

Red Hill EEC’s school vision statement is:

To provide a safe and engaging educational environment so that students can learn from the past to inform the future.

Red Hill Environmental Education Centre (EEC) is a facility of the Department of Education located within the Mudgee Network in Central West NSW. Red Hill EEC's motto is, 'Learning from our past to inform our future'.

We provide curriculum-aligned school excursions, incursions, high-potential/gifted education (HPGE) programs and teacher professional learning for all NSW public and non-government schools from Early Childhood Education through Year 12.

Our local environment

The Wiradjuri people are the traditional custodians of the country on which Re Hill EEC sits. Red Hill EEC is strongly supported by our local Aboriginal community through the Gulgong Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) as we collaborate to authentically deliver Aboriginal cultural programs and build capacity of teachers to do the same.

Red Hill EEC was established in 1995 as a specialised Urban Field Study Centre in rural NSW, with a focus on supporting the teaching of history. With our location in the historic Gold Rush town of Gulgong, many of our programs work to support the NSW history syllabus with experiential, hands-on activities that lead to a deeper knowledge and understanding of this pivotal time in Australian history. Our centre also offers a variety of programs in science, geography, mathematics, creative arts and sustainability.

Red Hill EEC utilises a variety of locations in our region to engage students and enhance learning outcomes in programs focus Click here to find out more about our excursion sites.

Learning programs

Red Hill EEC run hands-on learning programs for students from Early Childhood Education to Year 12. Our programs link to what students are learning in class and can be changed to suit their needs. Our programs also include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. Students learn about culture, Country and how to care for the environment.

Our staff are trained teachers who are experts in environmental education. They guide students through real-world learning experiences that are active and engaging. Students get to explore, ask questions and think about the world around them. We also give schools activities to do before and after the visit to help keep the learning going.

Red Hill EEC:

Our logo features the native Regent Honeyeater with its sun-gold feathers, gently nestled atop the red dirt of Red Hill, symbolising our Connection to Country and acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the Wiradjuri Country on which we live, grow and learn.

The logo represents the historical and cultural significance of Red Hill, Gulgong and our surrounding landscapes and embodies Red Hill Environmental Education Centre’s goal to support students and community in

Learning From Our Past to Inform Our Future.

As a critically endangered species, endemic to our region and our native Box Gum Grassy Woodlands, the Regent Honeyeater would have been witnessed in large flocks of golden bellies across the skies of Gulgong during the Gold Rush days. Today, the survival of this flagship species is highly dependent on the actions of humans, as we dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of improving existing knowledge and creating new understanding so that we can live sustainably in support of all species.

Our new logo represents Red Hill Environmental Education Centre’s goal to Connect with all Students and Schools within our region, following their migratory breeding patterns across south-eastern Australia. Furthermore, the extensive work of the community for the conservation of the Regent Honeyeater signifies Red Hill Environmental Education Centre’s Connection to Community, as we endeavour to actively engage all those who value the ongoing education of our young learners.

The placement of the iconic Gulgong Poppet Head holds an equally important role in Learning From Our Past To Inform Our Future, recognising the significance of Red Hill and the establishment of the Centre as one of the very first Department of Education Historic Urban Environmental Education Centre’s in NSW. The Poppet Head stands strongly to represent our commitment to both urban and natural conservation and management, and continuing on the legacy of those educators before us.
