History: Present and Past Family Life

Program Location: Red Hill Environmental Education Centre

This unit provides a study of present and past family life within the context of the students' own world.  It explores the changes to ‘the Family’ over time. Students actively particpate in activites that demonstrate 'yindyamarra'.

History/PDHPE Outcomes

  • HT1-1 communicates an understanding of change and continuity in family life using appropriate historical terms
  • HT1-2 identifies and describes significant people, events, places and sites in the local community over time
  • HT1-4 demonstrates skills of historical inquiry and communication
  • PD1-3 recognises and describes the qualities that enhance inclusive and respectful relationships

  • How has family life changed or remained the same over time?
  • How can we show that the present is different from or similar to the past?
  • How do we describe the sequence of time?
  • What remains of the past are important to the local community? Why?
  • How can we be inclusive and respectful?

Key syllabus outcomes

  • Differences in family structures and roles today, and how these have changed or remained the same over time (ACHHK028)
  • Differences and similarities between students’ daily lives and life during their parents’ and grandparents’ childhoods, including family traditions, leisure time and communications. (ACHHK030)
  • The history of a significant person, building, site or part of the natural environment in the local community and what it reveals about the past (ACHHK044)
  • The importance today of an historical site of cultural or spiritual significance.
  • Describe and practise ways to develop caring and respectful relationships and include others to make them feel they belong (ACPPS019)
