Gulgong Heritage Township

Gulgong is particularly known for its's days as a major gold rush town after the discovery of gold at Red Hill in 1870, followed by the influx of prospectors leading to a population of around 20,000 by the year 1872. The heart and soul of the gold rush days are famously captured in the UNESCO Holtermann Collection, proudly on display at the community-led Gulgong Holtermann Museum. Today, the town retains much of its 19th-century character, with historical sites including the Prince of Wales Opera House, and is known for its special connection to the bush poet Henry Lawson.

Red Hill EEC delivers a variety of local history learning programs based in the town of Gulgong, visiting all the wonderful locations and museums dedicated to the conservation of our special town.
